GIZI Coffee and Bakeshop

  • Location: R. Carvalho Araújo 4, 9500-040 Ponta Delgada, Portugal
  • Perfect for: Discerning coffee drinkers, lovers of Swedish pastries, and those who want a fresh baked loaf of bread.
  • Best time to visit: Morning, when the baked goods selection is at its best.
  • What to order:
    • Any espresso drink
    • Cinnamon roll
    • Cardamom bun
  • What to know: Like many cafes and restaurants in Ponta Delgada, GIZI is not open seven days a week. Make sure to check its Google Maps listing or Instagram for the most up-to-date opening hours.

GIZI Coffee and Bakeshop was opened in April 2026 by two Hungarian expats. The modern, airy cafe celebrates artisanal coffee and baking by putting its delicious baked goods front and center and offering a clear view into its kitchen. Its menu is highly curated, as it features a small selection of espresso drinks, pastries, breads, and sandwiches.

GIZI is a welcome addition to Ponta Delgada’s extremely small third wave coffee scene. I ordered a flat white and was pleasantly surprised that I could choose between Brazilian and Colombian coffee beans. GIZI also offers alternative milks, including oat milk and pea milk. I also had a Swedish cinammon bun, which was warm and fluffy since it had recently come out of the oven.

Coffee Roasters Intz48 Azores

  • Best time to visit: Morning for breakfast or early afternoon for lunch.
  • What to order:

  • What to know: Coffee Roasters Intz48 Azores is only open on select days, so make sure you check the business’s latest hours on Google Maps. Be patient, as the owner is the only person who takes orders, processes payment, and makes drinks. Bitcoin is accepted.

Coffee Roasters Intz48 Azores is one of the best cafes in Ponta Delgada for people who care about coffee roasting. As the name suggests, this spot places a strong emphasis on roasting and sourcing high-quality beans. It has the most extensive coffee menu that I saw in Ponta Delgada, as you can choose from three different coffee beans, different types of lattes, and several bulletproof coffees.

The owner, Daniel, single-handedly runs the front of house while also acting as the barista. Although he’s constantly running back and forth between taking orders and making drinks, he’s very friendly and makes you feel like a regular.

I had a lovely flat white and large ham and cheese omelette, which came with a side salad and fresh bread. Even though my omelette was one of the best egg dishes that I had in Ponta Delgada, I couldn’t help but eye the hefty sandwiches that the table next to me got.

There’s a good amount of indoor seating at the back of the cafe, and a few tables outside. Coffee Roasters Intz48 Azores also sells coffee beans if you want to take some home.

AMOR.A Cake & Coffee

  • Location: Rua Engº José Cordeiro Antiga da Calheta 17, 9500-310 Ponta Delgada, Portugal
  • Perfect for: An afternoon coffee break or light breakfast.
  • Best time to visit: Early morning to make sure you can grab a table, or late morning or mid-afternoon to indulge in a decadent dessert and coffee.
  • What to order:
    • Cake
    • Brigadeiro
    • Any coffee or espresso drink
    • Savory toast
  • What to know: There are only about five or six tables, so it may be difficult to get a seat. You may need to get your drinks and food to go instead. Be patient, as there are only two to three workers. No laptops are allowed.

AMOR.A Cake & Coffee is a small, intimate cafe for when you want something sweet to go with your coffee. Next to the counter, you’ll find the daily selection of brigadeiros, cakes, and pastries. This makes it the perfect stop for an afternoon snack after you’ve wandered around Ponta Delgada.

When I was in Ponta Delgada, I visited AMOR.A Cake & Coffee multiple times and tried a variety of things, including their iced tea, a latte, a slice of lemon and passionfruit cake, and a lemon and berry loaf. Everything I had was excellent and the perfect amount of sweetness.

CASCARA Coffee – Shop

  • Location: R. Diário dos Açores 26, 9500-178 Ponta Delgada, Portugal
  • Perfect for: Breakfast/brunch and afternoon coffee.
  • Best time to visit: To avoid waiting in line, go as soon as they open or a few hours before they close.
  • What to order:
    • Any espresso drink except for the latte
    • Single origin coffee
    • Any baked good, breakfast, or lunch food
  • What to know: They usually do not offer takeaway and will even put up a sign to let people know. As one of the few breakfast places open on Sundays, it gets busy and there can be a wait.

CASCARA Coffee – Shop feels like a cafe that you’d find in a larger European city. The interior is gorgeous and modern, with high ceilings and a large counter in the middle displaying baked goods and a colorful floral arrangement. There’s plenty of food and drink options to choose from, including breakfast and lunch dishes, different coffee brewing methods, and alcoholic drinks.

Although there’s limited seating inside, CASCARA has a large and shaded garden patio surrounded by plants. As long as the weather’s nice, opt for outdoor seating.

If you like your coffee with milk, I recommend ordering the flat white over the latte. I got a latte the first time I went to CASCARA, and it had way too much milk. I could barely taste the coffee. When I went back a second time and tried the flat white, there was a much better balance between coffee and milk.

Jardim Natural Food & Coffee

  • Location: Rua do Jardim, 9500-250 Ponta Delgada, Portugal
  • Perfect for: Brunch lovers, vegetarians, and those who want a lighter meal with their coffee.
  • Best time to visit: Late morning or early afternoon for brunch on weekdays.
  • What to order:
    • Any coffee or espresso drink
    • Acai or yogurt bowl
    • Any sandwich or toast
  • What to know: Due to its beautiful and unique setting, Jardim Natural Food & Coffee is popular. Since seating is limited, it’s best to go on a weekday, right when they open, or in the evening. Be sure to explore the botanical garden before or after your meal.

Jardim Natural Food & Coffee is one of the best brunch-oriented cafes in Ponta Delgada, especially if you’re looking for fresh and healthy food options alongside good coffee. The menu includes breakfast dishes like oatmeal, an acai bowl, yogurt and granola, and pancakes. There are also small bites, sandwiches, toasts, and an extensive drink menu made up of tea, coffee, alcoholic, and non-alcoholic options.

What sets Jardim Natural Food & Coffee apart from all other coffee shops on this list is its setting. The cafe is located inside Jardim Botânico António Borges, a free urban botanical garden filled with caves, ponds, ducks, roosters, and beautifully maintained plants. While there’s indoor seating, I recommend sitting outside if it’s a nice day. Their outdoor tables have large umbrellas to shade you on a sunny day or keep you dry when it rains.

Terra Verde Tea House

  • Location: Rua Dr. Francisco Faria e Maia n.º 16, 9500-239 Ponta Delgada, Portugal
  • Perfect for: A simpler coffee without the latte art, an afternoon coffee break, and groups with both coffee and tea drinkers.
  • Best time to visit: Breakfast time or mid-afternoon for a coffee break and slice of cake.
  • What to order:
    • Cappuccino, espresso, or milk with coffee (galão)
    • A pot of tea
    • Cake
  • What to know: Service can be slower during peak hours, since there are limited staff. I went on a particularly busy day where the two ladies working the front of house were overwhelmed.

Although Terra Verde is known for its large tea selection, it also does coffee quite well. While you won’t find some espresso drinks here, like a latte or flat white, the cafe does have a small selection that includes espresso, cappuccino, and milk with coffee (galão).

I usually get a latte or flat white, so I ordered the milk with coffee and was very happy with my drink. I thought it had the perfect amount of steamed milk, making it similar to a latte.

How I chose the best coffee shops in Ponta Delgada

I spent three weeks in Ponta Delgada visiting any and all highly-rated coffee shops. At each of these places I ordered a flat white or latte. If a place didn’t serve either of them, I got whatever drink was closest. These rankings are mostly based on the quality of the coffee, but they also factor in food, atmosphere, service, and my overall experience.

I paid for all my drinks and food. I also went to several of these places multiple times in order to see how consistent their coffee was, experience them during a variety of times in the day, and try different items.
